FLEET BOSTON CELEBRITY
SERIES ORCHESTRAL SUITE
Press reviews
In their first-ever commission of Latin music, FleetBoston
Celebrity Series sponsored Sol y Canto’s musical director
and guitarist, Brian Amador, to compose a Latin suite entitled
"Prisma de amores" for Sol y Canto and orchestra.
The 5-song suite features Cuban, Puerto Rican and Argentine
rhythms. Thirty-six members of the acclaimed Boston Modern
Orchestra Project, led by conductor Gil Rose, were selected
to perform with the band for the world premiere of the work
on Friday, November 16th at 8pm at the nearly sold-out 1,100-seat
Sanders Theater, Harvard University in Cambridge, MA where
the suite received a standing ovation. Brian Amador, recipient
of a 1995 Massachusetts Cultural Council artist grant for
musical composition, penned "Prisma de amores" with
the aim of taking Sol y Canto’s popular pan-Latin style
into new sonic territories.
Unlike many collaborations between popular and symphonic
ensembles in which orchestral arrangements are added to already-existing
songs, this piece was composed specifically for this performance.
Orchestral colors, textures and effects are woven into traditional
styles such as son, bolero, danzón, bomba and tango
in a surprising and powerful meditation on the many facets
of love. Following the premiere, Sol y Canto continues to
tour the suite nationally with pops orchestras and chamber
ensembles who share the goals of celebrating Latin culture
and expanding their concert series to reach new audiences
as well as the rapidly growing Latin music market. Visit us
soon for announcements of upcoming performances of "Prisma
de amores".
A Note from the Composer Brian Amador:
“Prisma de amores”(“Prism of Loves”)
is the realization of a dream I’ve had for some time
of writing a Latin suite for Sol y Canto and orchestra. I’ve
approached these pieces from the perspective of composing
for, rather than arranging for, the orchestra: rather than
creating a lush background to accompany the songs, the orchestral
colors and textures are woven into the songs themselves. Stylistically,
my aim was to preserve the authenticity of the different rhythms
while taking advantage of the colors, textures and effects
of the orchestral instruments. As the title suggests, this
piece is a prism. The subject of love is viewed from different
perspectives, and the music suggests many possible interpretations.
While the lyrics are quite personal, the voices of the instruments
reflect a multitude of often ambivalent feelings and reflections.
